Many people spend a lot of time talking about the “X’s” and “O’s” and the details of football games. But there is something that is often overlooked, but will actually determine who wins and who loses in most football games. It’s mental toughness.

During our unbeaten season in 1994, we would make the decision as an offense to put the game away at halftime. That didn’t mean it always happened. But it meant we were determined to do more than just win, but rather dominate our opponents. If the other team felt like they could have won the game, we didn’t make them say ouch. To dominate in football is to make the other team want to run off the pitch, and start looking at the clock hoping it rushes in at 0:00.

Coach Paterno would tell us to line up, run our game, hit the other team, knock them down, help them up, then knock them down again! Being mentally strong means that your team will work so that the other team doesn’t want to get up after the game. I’m not talking about playing dirty, or playing outside the rules of the game. I’m talking about being physical and being ready to hit and take a hit.

I remember on a 2 minute drill against Indiana, I grabbed a post over the middle to put us in goal range. Security drilled me in the back as I climbed to catch the ball. Immediately I knew I was hurt. I could feel my ribs crumble from the blow. But I wasn’t going to give the other team the satisfaction of knowing they hurt me. I got up as fast as I could and ran to the sideline as the placement team came onto the field. As soon as I was out of sight of a camera on the sidelines, I screamed in pain! I ended up having to get shot at halftime to end the game.

Why was it important for me to get up? Because I wanted to tell the other team when I stood up, that their best shot can’t stop me! I can take it, get up and do another piece. During a match, this fact will cause your team to maintain momentum, while causing the other team to lose hope. Once a team loses hope, they can no longer win a game.
