Japanese Scrolls – A Creative Way to Use Art in the Classroom

Creating Japanese scrolls is one of my favorite ways to use art in the classroom and it works regardless of class size. In feudal Japan, when a message needed to be passed from one samurai lord to another, for example, it was done by an elaborate scroll that was tied with a ribbon and hand-delivered.

As far as age appropriateness goes, this activity works well from mid-primary and up. The older the students, the more complex the drawings and language are likely to be.

What you need per student:

  1. a set of 6 sheets of blank paper* (letter or A4 size depending on where your school is located);

  2. Scotch,

  3. a piece of red ribbon about 12″ (25 cm) long. Buy a roll and cut it as needed.

  4. Pencil (the student should already have it)

  5. Eraser (student should already have it)

  6. Pencil sharpener (there should be one in the classroom)

  7. Colored pencils are optional. Colored markers are also acceptable, but keep it simple. You set the rules.

*For older students, you may want to splurge and buy thicker but not too thick card stock or parchment type paper for greater authenticity. The aim of the activity is to ask each student to write and illustrate a story in 6 panels which, from beginning to end, does not exceed the 6 sheets available to them. They will need to do a bit of planning with a start panel, an end panel and 4 intermediate panels on the “body of the story”.

Students should first try to think of a topic. Perhaps you, as the teacher, can put a list of story ideas on the board to give them a starting point. You might even choose to create and illustrate a story on the board to show them what to do. This should be done in advance. You can demonstrate how a story should flow smoothly from start to finish. Many students will jump right into it while others will tell you they can’t think of anything to write. This is where your ideas on the board will help you.

On the blackboard (or on a large computer screen in class), you can have different columns

  1. Hero/heroine, villain or nice/bad guy, father, mother, friend, brother, sister

  2. Fight/war/save the planet/jungle, desert, city, airport, game

  3. Plane, boat, spaceship, submarine, bicycle, motorcycle, car, house, building, school

  4. Alien, Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Thief, Football, Hockey, Baseball, Cricket

  5. Dog, cat, monkey, lion, tiger, elephant, snake, spider, horse

  6. Flood, tornado, tsunami, snowstorm, hailstorm, duststorm, sun

  7. Witch, elves, goblins, dwarfs, giants, trolls, dragon

  8. Christmas, Easter, holiday, vacation, weekend, visitor

(Add or subtract from any of these lists as you see fit)

Students can choose from what you have written on the board or anything else of their own imagination. It can be given as homework as long as you can be sure it will be their own work when it comes back. If they like video games, a direct copy is not allowed. It must be their personal idea and written/graphic interpretation. This might also be a good time to introduce the idea of ​​plagiarism.

Depending on the age of your students, maybe an approximate limit of 5-6 sentences per page/panel for younger students and a paragraph or two for older students. You don’t need epistles here. This is simply a fun exercise to teach students how to think about developing a story outline, a beginning and an end, and some simple hand drawings to help give readers/viewers a visual interpretation of the story. This process will help all students in the upper grades.

The idea is for each student to write and illustrate their story in 6 panels (like 6 pages of a children’s storybook), then glue the panels together, roll them up and tie them with the red ribbon. (You can change the colors as you wish). They have to put their name in the rolled up story so they can find theirs if all are put in a basket, for example.

The “revelation” follows when each student comes to the front of the class and tells their story. I like to bring students to the fore in small groups of no more than 6 students depending on your class size (idea from Dale Carnegie). This reduces students’ stress levels and gives them support instead of leaving them alone in front. The group takes turns reading their story and standing until all group members have read their story. Then they sit down and the next group arrives. Encourage (you can direct) the rest of the class to clap. The applause is great before and after each story and each group as they step up to the front and again as they return to their seats. It’s another way to reduce stress and at the same time show students that their efforts are appreciated…a good life lesson. Look at the level of applause though; be respectful of other classes around you.

There’s something magical about untying the ribbon and stretching out the story, then reading it panel by panel. A good idea then is to post the stories around the room for everyone to see – especially if you have an apparent teacher’s day coming up! Be sure to take pictures of each student with their scrolls rolled up and then read their story to the class. These make great photos to send home for parents! It also shows the school principal how creative you are!
