Wide Receivers – Work on Catching the Ball With Just Your Hands

As a wide receiver, you know you’re supposed to catch the ball with your hands, not pin it against your body. Now, during a match, the only thing that matters is catching the ball in every possible way. You can trap it against your body or even your helmet. Who could forget that incredible catch from David Tyree, trapping the ball on the back of his helmet, to extend the last Super Bowl winning touchdown. But in practice, you always try to catch it with your hands.

One drill is simple, but it will work on your hand-eye coordination and help you catch the ball with just your hands at the highest point. Lie on your back and gently throw a ball upwards. When the ball comes back to you, reach out and grab it. Then always watch the ball go home. Then just repeat.

Now I know this is a simple exercise, but if you keep doing this every night your hand-eye coordination will improve, not to mention your hand strength and muscle memory in placing your hands at the correct distance to capture. There are always variants that can be used. Try starting your throw with your eyes closed and then open them to increase your reaction time. Try to catch the ball with one hand by alternating throws.
