Object Lesson – A Christian Super Bowl Challenge

What do you need

  • Newsprint or long strip of paper – Classified ads work great
  • A marker to write on the paper
  • Football themed decorations

Preparation

Create a miniature soccer field in the center of the room.

  • Cut newsprint into 11 long strips 3 or 4 inches wide (small print classified ads work best. Cut from double newsprint to get the longest strips possible.)
  • You can usually use wide tape to replace paper strips, but be sure to check it first to make sure it won’t damage carpeting or floor tiles.
  • In the center of each strip of paper or tape, label the yard lines. You should have one strip for each of the following:

— PURPOSE —

— ten —

— 20 —

— 30 —

— 40 —

— PURPOSE —

  • Lay the strips of paper on the floor to create a miniature football pitch as shown above.

Create a soccer ball

  • Cut a brown paper bag or a piece of brown cardboard in the shape of a soccer ball. Use a marker to draw the laces on the soccer ball shape so it looks more like a soccer ball.
  • You can also use a small soccer ball that is easily found at a toy store. They are usually the size of a large orange.

What to do

Bible Quiz

  1. Choose a quiz of at least 50 questions. These can be questions from recent Bible lessons or just Bible questions.
  2. Divide the youngsters into two different teams and seat them at opposite ends of the soccer field.
  3. Flip a coin to see which team goes first
  4. Start at the 50 meter line
  5. Each “game” consists of asking a young person on the team a question that must be answered. You may want to limit each youth on the team to answering one question to ensure that all youth participate.
  6. A correct answer moves the team forward 10 meters. A wrong answer causes the team to lose 5 meters. If the student is unsure of the answer, they can “pass” to another player on the team who has not yet answered a question. One pass per question is allowed.
  7. The winner is the first team to reach the opposing end zone (A touchdown). If the game lasts too long, the team closest to the end zone wins.
  8. For more fun, decorate the room with football logos and come and dress up as a referee with a whistle.

VARIANTS

Instead of a quiz, you can use the following ideas:

  • soccer charades

Place a bunch of football-related words on folded slips of paper and put them in a bowl. Divide into two teams. A team player takes a slip into the bowl, watches it, and then must play the word for their team. If the team hasn’t guessed the word in one minute, the opposing team can guess and try to steal the ball. When a masquerade is correctly guessed, the team advances 5 meters. There is an attached list of Super Bowl/Football related words you can use for charades.

You can also play charades using the names of different football teams.

  • forbidden word

Divide into two teams and each time someone from the opposing team says the word football, the ball is advanced for your team.

TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

DISCUSSION

  • What do you know about football? Who is the football expert?
  • Do you have to know everything about the game to appreciate the football game?
  • Are there people who don’t really care about football but get carried away with the excitement of the event? Why?
  • Do you need to know everything about the team players to enjoy the game?
  • What’s in the Super Bowl that excites people?
  • Are you as excited about God as you are about the Super Bowl? Why or why not?

MAKE IT SPIRITUAL

  • Equipment – Ephesians 6:10-18 – In terms of football, Paul, the team coach, gives his team a pep talk before the game, reminding them to put on their equipment – the hip pads of the truth, the shoulder pads of justice, the preparation cleats, the face mask of faith, the helmet of salvation, and play by the rules of the Playbook.” Then they form a team that seeks perseverance and strength to win the victory over their opponent.
  • Fans – Some people are in the game and some are just watching. Some wear the uniform, just to be seen by others, but not on the field. They watch but do not act. (James 1:22; Matthew 23:1-25)
  • Rules – We must compete according to the rules so that we are not disqualified for the prize (2 Tim. 2:5; 1 John 2:3-4; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 10:23)
  • Goals – Philippians 3:14 – Run towards the goal to win the prize for which God called me to heaven.
  • Perseverance – James 1:2-4 – You will face many trials and when you persevere through these trials you will emerge victorious. (Ephesians 6:13; Hebrews 10:36)
  • Cheers – We need to cheer each other on. (I Thessalonians 5:11; Hebrews 10:23-25; Hebrews 12:1-2)
  • The clock is ticking – are you ready? Make the most of your time. (Ephesians 5:15-16; Colossians 4:5-6; 1 Corinthians 9:26-27; 1 Peter 3:15; 2 Timothy 4:2)

MAKE PRACTICAL

  • How is the church (or this group) like a football team?

(We are united as a team, we have a goal (the Great Commission), we work together to achieve a goal, there is opposition, sometimes unexpected things happen, sometimes we fumble in our tasks, sometimes we win ground, while other times we are losing ground, we have a coach (God), sometimes we have to defend against the opponent, time is running out, there are people watching us (spectators), everyone don’t play fair, there are penalties for fouls, we have to wear protective gear (armor of God), we have different positions in the team, there are people who play and there are people on the sidelines, we need a game plan, etc.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL

  • Are you part of the team (A Christian?) Why or why not?
  • If you are, what is your position in the team?
  • Are you on the sidelines or are you playing the game?
  • Are you a team player?
  • Are you focused on the goal?
  • What can you start doing to help the team more effectively overcome opposition and achieve future goals?

WRITING

1 Corinthians 1:25-27

“Everyone who participates in the games goes through strict training. They do it to get a crown that won’t last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I don’t run like someone who runs aimless; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike my body and make it my slave so that after preaching to others I myself shall not be disqualified for the prize .
