Fantasy Football Sleepers – Running Back Rankings in Fantasy Football 2009
Fantasy football leagues require you to start 2 RBs, and in those leagues with a flexible position, you might even need a third RB starter. Since we’re usually talking about 12 men’s leagues, that means 24-36 RBs will start each week, and you’ll need saves, as the injury bug and underachievements always bite you. How do you avoid the pain of overspending on RBs, and where are those el-cheapo value picks? We are on our way with RB sleepers for 2009.
There are basically 3 levels of RB Fantasy production to consider. The top tier is 250-300 Fantasy Points in a standard scoring format, with around 4 or 5 RB candidates. The second level is 200 to 250 points, with around 10 or 11 RB. Then you have maybe 15 guys who will give you 150-200 points. That’s only 29 or 30 really productive runners. You can see how important it is to get a few sleepers and get them at a discount.
Derrick Ward has so many things going right for him in Tampa Bay that it’s almost silly. Earnest Graham will share the runs with him, but after Graham sprained his ankle last year and a huge contract signed by Ward in the offseason, it’s obvious TB will hand the ball over most of the time. Ward has averaged 5.3 yards per carry in New York over the past two years and is also threatening to catch the ball. Look for 48 catches, 1,500 total yards from scrimmage and 8 touchdowns. These types of numbers will place it at the bottom of the second back tier, and you can expect to pick it up on the 6th or 7th spin, not bad for 3rd or 4th spin numbers.
Donald Brown is a fast UConn Rookie tailback who impressed Indy bigwigs with his hands as much as his feet. If you remember what Joseph Addai did three seasons ago on a running back by committee effort, and if you factor in Addai’s less than impressive 2008, I think you can research 150 fantastic points from Brown. Addai hasn’t played a full season in 2 years now, and Brown will likely drop from round 12 to 14. Getting round 6 production in round 12 is what the draft is all about, and I don’t think you can go wrong here.
Anyone can pick Matt Forte with the 5th overall pick, but knowing who to pick mid to late rounds, without paying too much, is where the Fantasy titles are won. Look for things like backups, people splitting runs with injury-ridden guys, and team jumpers getting into favorable situations. If you keep these things in mind, you’ll be sure to get good value from the RB position and catch a sleeper or two.
