The Balanced Line Single Wing Offense for Youth Football
Most youth football teams that run the single wing attack run it from the traditional lopsided line set.
Many coaches have asked me about the use of the Balanced Line Single Wing Offense in youth football. For most coaches, they ask because they have “special rules” in their youth soccer leagues that require them to use balanced line formations. 2-3% of junior football leagues have rules like this.
It is very simple to change the attack from a single unbalanced line wing to a set of balanced lines. While most high schools that run the single-wing offense stick with the unbalanced set, a number also have one or two balanced line sets.
Menominee Michigan High School runs almost its entire one-wing offense off a balanced lineset. Menominee won another state title last year and knocked out the reigning state champion in the largest class (Wayzata – 3,400 students) from Minnesota. Menominee, as most of you know, has only 550 students. It’s hard to argue with Menominee head coach Ken Hofer, who has over 250 wins in this offense from a balanced line set. Hofer is a legend in Single Wing circles and is an excellent clinical speaker.
Some modifications are necessary if you are running the single wing attack from a set of balanced lines:
The middle of the offensive line is the center, you are now on the center. Pull the left protection on the off tackle runs to the right. Only shoot the right guard (not the electric tackle as well) on reverse runs to the left. Left tackle blocks GD, Gap-Down on traps left.
As you can see, switching to the balanced line isn’t a big deal if you’re required to. If I was forced to carry out this offense, these would be the changes I would make. I would make my power go to the left guard because he would be my second most athletic lineman.
We all have to play by whatever rules the leagues think makes sense, no matter how dumb. Don’t dwell or complain, just make the adjustments and make it work.
