Belly Option Out of the I Formation
Training I has stood the test of time. The I first gained popularity in college play, but was also widely used in high school play. Although the basic game of formation I is the old power play or iso, this formation is versatile enough to lend itself to other patterns and series. We have used this training almost exclusively for over twenty years at the high school level and have had great success with it. Easy to learn and easy to coach, it was exactly what we were looking for.
We wanted to kick the option out of the I and after talking to several coaches whose programs we admired, we put together a football option system that we felt was right for our athletes. One particular series that became our bread and butter was the rear belly option series. We called this our “40” series. Series 40 consisted of about four or five plays that could be run against any defense. Let’s take a look at some of our pieces.
Our first and best game was the belly from the back. We called it 44 belly. For us, belly referred to the type of block our line would execute at the point of attack. Our belly block had to be directed to the tight side and was simply an outside trap set or “G” pattern, as some call it. Playside TE and tackle blocks while playside guard shoots and kicks. The back rowers step on the play side and execute a cut block. The QB backtracks while gaining depth and puts the ball in the belly of the FB. We wanted a good hip-to-hip ride with the FB. After handing the ball to the FB, the QB continued with his option look as he attacked the perimeter with a good option feint. The FB took a side step to the side of play and then aimed for the outside hip of the tackle as he took over. The tailback (or running back) started flat and parallel to the line of scrimmage and was careful to keep a good height relationship distance from the QB. He and the QB made a good counterfeit option. We liked a smaller, faster FB that could read belly block, cut, and blast through the seam.
Our second piece in the series was 44 belly keep. Everything remained the same as the belly of the FB except this time the QB kept the ball and followed the FB into the hole, using him as a header blocker. It’s kind of like a power belly game.
Our third piece in the series was the 48 belly. Again everything stayed the same but now after a good feint to the FB the QB was pulling the ball out of the FB belly and attacking the perimeter of the defense. The QB now had the option to keep the ball and cut the pitch or throw to the TB if there was no opening. In these three games, the TB puts itself on the launch track and executes its option route. When running at 48, we didn’t always have belly lock; Sometimes we block it or run with our TE. Veer meant that the TE would not block on the LOS but would execute an outward arc block, leaving the defensive end unblocked. So the game in the huddle could be called 48 belly, 48 base or 48 turns.
A fourth coin in the series was our 44 assists. Again all the backs executed the same action as always in the 40 series but this time after a good feint at FB the QB quickly moved back to gain depth for a forward pass. The back wide receiver ran a post while the playside wide receiver ran. Our favorite target, the TE, made a turn about 10 to 15 meters deep. The better our belly functioned, the better this game opened up.
This series became the backbone of our offense and provided us with an identity that we were known for. For more great ideas and hundreds of free soccer videos, visit Chiefpigskin.com.
