Athletes and Steroids: Their Lying and You’re Buying It

Athletes lie to us. They lie and we believe their lies. Well, most of us do. You see, many athletes who test positive for banned substances blame dietary supplements as the cause of the positive test. Consider the following statement from Iowa State linebacker Matt Robertson, who was recently kicked from the Iowa State football team for testing positive for a banned substance.

“I take full responsibility for taking any over-the-counter supplement prohibited by the NCAA,” Robertson said in a statement released Monday. “I am paying a heavy price for a very bad decision, because I will never wear an Iowa State uniform again. I hope my example serves as a warning to others who are considering using dietary supplements .”

Statements like these cause unnecessary hysteria among the general public regarding dietary supplements. In Mr. Robertson’s quote, note the term “dietary supplements” specifically. Dietary supplement is a very broad term, it covers literally thousands of different types of products. There is only one type of dietary supplement that will test positive for steroids. These supplements are called pro-hormones. Did a pro-hormone cause Mr. Robertson’s positive result? Maybe, but we’ll never know the truth.

Pro-hormones are used to increase the body’s testosterone levels just like steroids, but with much less effect. Any athlete who takes a pro-hormone knows what it does. They know that pro-hormones are designed to increase testosterone, which gives it more muscle mass and better athletic performance. On top of that, Pro-Hormones says something right on the bottle that “Professional and amateur athletes who are tested for performance-enhancing substances should consult their sanctioning body before using this product because the use of it can cause a reactive drug test.” Pretty clear isn’t it? You can’t tell me Mr. Robertson can’t read, he’s “a Big 12 academic performer who was as good in the classroom as he was on the field,” according to his coach Dan McCarney.

Blaming a positive test on any of these products may be true as they can cause a positive result on a steroid test. However, it would also be very easy to blame a positive test on a dietary supplement when the athlete was actually using a steroid. Since actual supplements are rarely made public, it’s easy to blame a positive test on a dietary supplement.

It makes no difference because a positive test is a positive test, right? Fake. By blaming their positive test on dietary supplements instead of steroids, these athletes are “passing the buck”. That is, they claim ignorance, instead of taking responsibility, and they harm the multi-billion dollar dietary supplement industry in the process. . This is not acceptable, not only because it creates false beliefs among the public about supplements, but also because it gives the federal government reason to further restrict what you can buy without a prescription.

Would you like to have to go to your doctor to get a prescription for a multivitamin? What if you wanted to buy a protein supplement? Would you have to go to your doctor for this? I did not mean it. These athletes and their organizations are extremely irresponsible in using general terms like dietary supplements to describe positive doping tests.

The NCAA and other governing bodies should be compelled to reveal what exact substance these athletes test positive for. By not doing so, these organizations are allowing athletes to save face at the expense of an entire multi-billion dollar industry. By forcing the NCAA and other governing bodies to name the specific substance that tested positive, they would eliminate any confusion about what is and is not the cause of the positive tests. Either that or the governing bodies, including the NCAA and the press, should be educated in proper supplement industry terminology. Painting reactive tests with the term “dietary supplements” is inaccurate, unfair and irresponsible.

Take for example Rafael Palmeiro, everyone remembers his too convincing testimony on the hill of the capital. How ironic that a few weeks later Rafael tested positive for Stanozolol, a steroid. Palmeiro tried hard to pass the blame. He blamed “tainted” dietary supplements, and when that didn’t work, he blamed a vitamin B12 injection. Well, Stanozol is a very specific and popular steroid. It is impossible for a positive for stanazolol to come from dietary supplements or B12. After people started to realize this, Palmeiro began to assert his ignorance, claiming that he had never knowingly taken steroids. Well, I guess Rafael will make a good living after baseball considering he’s the only person on earth who knows where to find pills that jump off the table into your mouth on their own. What a great idea, the little blue pill could become the popping little blue pill. It would be nice to see.

There must be some responsibility among the athletes for their positive tests. Those who test positive should not be allowed to blame the supplement industry. These athletes should be shown for what they really did. Did they take a pro-hormone because they were too stupid to read the label? Or did they take steroids? Knowing that if caught, they could claim ignorance and blame the “dirty” supplements. We’ll never know until governing bodies start naming specific substances responsible for positive tests.
