The Dish: Buck Stops Here
Schadenfreude is the pleasure one feels in the face of another’s misfortune. So says Mr. Webster.
And I have to say, I feel an inordinate amount of freude because of Buck Showalter’s recent schaden.
Showalter was fired this week as manager of the Texas Rangers. I don’t know why, but old Buck always rubbed me the wrong way. I’ve never met this man, but I have a feeling he’d be the mealy-mouthed traitor to your freshman class, rushing out to tell the teacher you were eating dough. Or that he’d be the one to start the rumor that you masturbate in the closet. Or that he came second for the science prize, then accidentally sabotaged the winner’s baking soda volcano.
In three major league stops, with the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers, Showalter has made professional athletes (who, despite the occasional opposition player, tend to be puppies looking for a lead dog) hate him. The year after Showalter’s last Yankees team snuffed out a playoff series against Seattle, Joe Torre came along and won the World Series. The year after Showalter’s last D-Backs team went 85-77, Bob Brenly came along and won the World Series. God, do you think the Texas Rangers hope history will repeat itself? Ditch Buck, winning a title?
Showalter has alienated most of the veterans from every club he has managed by confronting them about all the wrong things. Its dress codes are legendary, its behavioral policies anachronistic and its willingness to throw its players under the sturdy bus. He is known as the ultimate clubhouse politician, talking badly about one guy to make fun of another. He complains about the players in the front office. When he decides he can’t get along with someone, that’s it, there’s no winning. Guys like Alfonso Soriano and Kevin Mench are prime examples of players who should always be stars in Texas, but got on the wrong side of Showalter’s sneer. Even Alex Rodriguez, not a PR genius himself, said that when he came to the Yankees, it was like a breath of fresh air. Male. The Yankees? A breath of fresh air? This franchise is more buttoned up than Brooks Brothers. But everything smells good after Buck.
Listen, the young GM from Texas made a bunch of mistakes (hello Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young!). But Showalter’s politics and micromanagement had to go, and it didn’t matter if the door hit his back on his way out. He mismanaged an absolute plethora of attacking talent and left the closet more bare than when he arrived. If someone else gives him a job as a major league manager again, well, he deserves his fate. In the meantime, you can be sure that Showalter and his “insider” views on the game will reappear on ESPN, possibly as early as this month. Oh joy.
And the best 4-0 team in football is…? Baltimore? Indianapolis?
Chicago? Why?
BoDog Bookmakers, BoDog.ws: Making these kinds of decisions is incredibly difficult because everyone
asking will have a different opinion, and it’s quite easy to argue for
each of the three teams being “the better team 4-0”. Baltimore and
Chicago has very similar defensive styles, though, as was evident in
In Chicago’s last game, Rex Grossman turned the Bears’ offense into a
force to be reckoned with. Indianapolis, of course, has Peyton Manning
and a very strong attack, but there is no comparison between the
defense of the Colts and Bears. Chicago and Indianapolis are both
top teams on this list for one main reason: Steve McNair doesn’t
have the ability to control the pace of a game like Peyton Manning and
the Bears defense does.
Do you think Kurt Warner deserves to be benched by the Cardinals? Will be
would the team be better off with Matt Leinart? What are the other NFL QBs on the
hot seat, and could or should be replaced?
BDB, BoDog.ws: Kurt Warner absolutely deserves to be benched by the Cardinals. Like us
know, Leinart insisted on signing a contract at the start of training
camp until he got exactly what he wanted, and now it’s time for him to
earn it and take its pieces along the way. Adding Leinart will not be
will likely have an immediate effect on the Cardinals, as the learning curve
for rookie QB entering the NFL is definitely steep. It is
quite obvious that Warner is on the downside of his career and the
Cardinals better put Leinart behind the wheel to let
teach him and improve his game, instead of trying to resurrect
Warner’s declining career. If Leinart can sustain the pressure on the
defensive line and calling good plays, his confidence and his game
will improve quickly, and the fact that he has Edgerrin James in the
backfield is sure to ease some of the pressure on Leinart. The other two main candidates that I consider to be struggling QBs are Mark Brunell and Vince Young/Kerry Collins. Coming off of an overtime win over the Jacksonville Jags on Sunday certainly earned Brunell at least another
week at the helm, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Washington pulls out the old
switcheroo on him down the line. Keep an eye on Brunell, he’s definitely
a candidate to be moved. Meanwhile, after the Titans are destroyed by the
Cowboys, questions like “Did they put Vince in too early?” are required to
appear. It wouldn’t be a surprise if there was a bit of a flip-flop
for a few weeks in Nashville, but usually once a rookie like Young is
given it a shot, it’s bound to go for at least a few weeks, unless of course
they feel that it is completely outdated. The Titans could choose to go
with the more experienced Collins this weekend, however, as they face off
with the Indianapolis Colts. Keep an eye out for these two, the results might
turn out to be interesting.
Which team on the road is most likely to upset which home team in the
First round of the MLB playoffs? Detroit versus the Yankees? Oakland on
Minnesota? The Dodgers versus the Mets? St. Louis instead of San Diego? How
come?
BDB, BoDog.ws: Realistically every road crew has the potential to do something
special in October, and the confrontations are very interesting. Is the
Mets without Pedro managing Dodgers deep pitching staff? Is the
Injury-plagued Yankees pitching staff survives to see second
round? Will St. Louis come out of his funk and start playing like a real
suitors? Can Twins rookies (Bonser, Garza & Baker) shine behind
Will Johan Santana or the Oakland A’s win the series after facing
Santana? The team with the best potential to pull off the surprise is the
Oakland A. Santana is an exceptional pitcher, but the result of
the series will depend on whether or not the Twins rookies make the jump
and come through at the end. Enclosures and bats are fairly evenly
equaled at all levels, the Twins having a slight advantage in the
enclosure and with the bats, but the experience
is what wins the ball games in october. Either way, it should turn out to be
an exciting end to the season.
What is your reaction to the latest news that the names of Roger Clemens,
Andy Pettitte, Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons were
mentioned by confirmed steroid user Jason Grimsley as also using illegal products
performance-enhancing drugs?
BDB, BoDog.ws: The only surprise on this list is Andy Pettitte. Grimsley played
alongside Clemens and Pettitte in New York (99-00), but it’s hard to
believe that something like that would pass Joe Torre. Tejada, Roberts
and Gibbons were all in Baltimore with Grimsley in 2004-2005, when Brian
Roberts really hit his peak as an All-Star second baseman. That
is big news for everyone in the MLB community and it should be
interesting to see how it all unfolds. It could just be Grimsley
attracting attention since his playing days are over; he has never
earned the big payday and he wants some extra exposure. More interviews
he does, the more money he makes. We never know.
