Football Kicking Equipment
You want to start kicking, or maybe you already do, but you want to know what kind of kicking equipment to use. We draw on our 13+ years of experience in Division 1 and the NFL. Together we’ve used every punching gear you can think of. Throughout this article, we’ll tell you our favorite pieces of target shooting equipment that we’ve used.
The first striking gear you need is a good pair of striking shoes. Generally, kickers will use soccer cleats as their preferred choice of cleats. One reason is that the majority of kickers come from a football background, and the other reason is that they don’t have a toe cleat. Most, if not all, traditional American football cleats have a stud at the end of the shoe (toe cleat) that can get in the way when your foot slides gently across the ground. For this reason and many more, we’ll share our favorite shoes with you.
Personally, I like a thin kicking shoe so I can feel the contact with the ball. Mentally I feel like I have more control with a thinner material on my kick shoe. The Nike Mercurial Vapor is a great striking shoe made of thin material. Vapors don’t come cheap, usually priced at $150 and up. If you still want a fine striking shoe at a more economical price, I recommend the Nike Talaria. The Talaria is essentially the same shoe as the Vapor but half the price.
My colleague, on the other hand, feels more comfortable in a traditional kicking shoe with a bit more cushion. His preference is the Adidas Copa which costs just under $100. It all depends on your preferences, so choose what suits you best.
Field goal kick tee
The next piece of kicking gear you need is goal kicking gear. There aren’t many hitting tees to choose from except for tee size. Field goal tees are available in 2″ and 1″ sizes.
Typically you want to start with the 2″ tee, work your way down to the 1″ and eventually get the field goals off the ground. Personally, I used a 2″ tee until I was a junior in high school, then ran a 1″ tee for the rest of high school.
Field goal kick holder
On-pitch kick holders can be one of the cheapest pieces of football equipment. The easiest thing to do is to go to your local hardware store and get some PVC pipe and elbows to make your own bracket. Building your own toe kick stand will cost you less than $5, while buying one online is usually around $30 + shipping. Even NFL kickers use PVC kickers.
Don’t use specific punching equipment just because other people are doing it. Kicking is all about comfort, so use what works best for you.
