Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints WR
I wrote recently about how I think a number of unheralded New Orleans Saints players will soon gain national acclaim if they continue to play as they have until present this season. In this article, I want to pay special attention to WR Lance Moore who I truly believe is the Wes Welker of the Saints and one of the most underrated players in the NFL.
While the Saints offense has done well without him this season, I think Moore brings extra balance to the team when he’s healthy, as evidenced by last Sunday’s display against the Giants. He has great hands and runs strict routes, which gives Drew Brees great confidence when checking receivers. Combined with the short-receiving threat posed by Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey, it’s no wonder Moore was able to find the slot for so many key third-place conversions.
Moore was undrafted in 2005 but was asked to try out for the Saints’ practice squad after being waived by the Cleveland Browns. His story could have ended there, but like a number of current undrafted Saints players, his determination and strength of character allowed him to make the most of any opportunity that came his way. Such an opportunity presented itself in the 2007 season when he made his first professional start and scored on a reverse play from 7 yards against the Seahawks. From there, he repeatedly proved his worth as an accomplished team player.
No doubt because of those humble professional beginnings, coaches enjoy an egoless zone when dealing with Moore. He’s not afraid to rise above midfield and risk the big hit if he advances the Saints down. I love these players; in fact, I think the Saints are blessed to have found a group of wide receivers who prefer to speak on the field rather than in the press. Give me that kind of pro than a TO anytime.
So far this season he has been hampered by injury, as he said after the Giants game: “It’s been a long struggle for me this season because I got injured. It was great (today). It was great to be with my teammates and play in front of this crowd. I hope I can stay healthy.”
For a national audience, his numbers won’t be on the radar, but for those of us who follow the Saints closely, there will be few surprises when Moore’s name is mentioned in dispatches come playoff time. When the game is on the line and you need 3rd successive conversions in the 4th quarter, keep your eyes on Saint number 16 as he may remind you of a certain New England patriot of the past few years.
