The college football season is winding down and each week we’ve taken a look back at previous Pac-10 events. Now is the time to look forward a bit and see if we have a crystal ball for the season-ending individual grand prize – the Heisman Trophy.
With conference championship games and bowl games, it was a tough award to hand out in early December. Heck, in 1974, many ballots had been received before USC’s Anthony Davis trampled on Notre Dame; as such, the spectacular Archie Griffin won his first of two Heismans. Two Heismans would have paled in comparison to the four Beano Cook predicted for Irish QB Ron Powlus, but that’s beside the point.
It’s 2005 now, and with the advent of instant communication, Heisman voters have the ability to watch players until the last possible moment before casting their ballots. Last season, USC’s Matt Leinart won the award, beating a strong field of runners – and was one of the favorites for the award at the start of the season.
While Leinart will always have a trip to New York and a chance to show off the latest trends in menswear, he won’t be leaving with the hardware. Right now it’s a two-man race between Texas’ Vince Young and the incomparable RB Reggie Bush. Before Bush single-handedly demolished the state of Fresno, I would have voted for Young. Now, it’s hard to say beyond a shadow of a doubt that the one they call VY is the best in the country.
As for this weekend’s games, I’d say Bush has the best opportunity to make hay while the sun is shining. He plays for the defending national champions, in a rivalry game that has already made Heisman winners. In 1968, OJ Simpson led a play called Red-23 Blast for 64 yards and the game-clinching touchdown against the Bruins. Bush now has the same opportunity, although in ’68 the Juice ran for the No. 2 team in the nation (the Bruins were, at the time, ranked first overall). Look for the fast Bush to have a huge game against the Bruins and cement votes on national television.
Young is playing against a team from Colorado that has been rotten over time and hammered by a fringe team from Nebraska. The Buffaloes should be embarrassed by the turkey they put on the field the Friday after Thanksgiving, as Nebraska beat the stuffing. I don’t see Gary Barnett finding a way to conspire against this multifaceted Texas offense.
In a perfect college football world, we would have Texas and the Trojans meeting on January 4 in a win-win battle for the BCS National Championship and the Heisman Trophy. In fact, a perfect world would have a playoff system, but I digress. In a perfect college football world in 2005, that’s what we would have. Until then, my vote is for whoever they call the president: Reggie Bush.
