Teaching Junior Players the Art of Rucking in Australian Football

My overarching goal in coaching all of my teams during my coaching career was to develop every player regardless of their ability or importance in winning. This was especially true when I coached young players at the start of their football career. Therefore, I taught each player the skills needed to act as a ruckman. Some players develop physically earlier than others and may not develop further while others may be late developers. In my case, throughout my junior years, I was one of the shortest on the team. But, in the year before my eighteenth birthday, I grew over six inches (15 centimeters) to a height of over six feet (185 centimeters).

So, in training, I set up simple exercises where each player practiced rucking, solo. They would be taught to use both hands, to palm the ball forward, left, right and backward. They used both hands and also learned how to hit the ball. (Punch was, for me, at the junior stage, an advanced skill).

The next step was to have the boys practice rucking against a teammate with a third player throwing the ball.

Then a simple exercise introduced the rover to the process. Here, five players would work together alternating between being a ruck, a rover, or the boy throwing the ball.

Finally, the drill turns into a center bounce / ball up situation where I taught the boys how to set up and we practice each player in each role.

It’s also important to teach your players how to jump for the ball as well as how to protect themselves from injuries caused by knees coming up during the jumping action.

The rucking dimension of the game is not just ball rucking. It’s about knowing where to hit the ball, where to run, etc.

Here are some tips I’ve given my players to help them succeed.

• Most ruckman are right-handed, so the action of use tends to push the ball forward and to the left in junior and lower football. Your defensive player must therefore be positioned to take advantage if your ruckman does not win the ball.

• The ruckman must learn to propel the ball into space where his teammate will run.

• If you have a winning ruck combination, you can set up so that all your center players are bouncing in front of their goal and the ball is thrown into space with all those players running in support.

• The alternative when your team loses the most rucks is to have your players facing their opponent and moving towards them at the start of the ball.

Of course, the final step in developing your rucking players is to practice in test matches during your weekly practice and to use your runner to coach your ruckman in a competitive match. There are two areas where players fail to compete well. First, they start their run to the rucking contest too far from the ball. The second error is not extending the arm to its greatest height to reach the ball at a higher level and before his opponent.
