The 3-4 Defense For Pee Wee Football
The 3-4 defense has been used with great success, especially with the NFL’s Steelers. I have used the 3-4 with 5 year old flag players and 14 year old travel tackle players as long as it has been modified for the level you are coaching.
Resembling the 5-4 defence, the 3-4 will confuse many coaches at youth football level. A crucial element when setting up a difficult defensive system, such as the 3-4 defense, is to ensure that it has been adjusted to the level you are training. If you’re coaching a young team, you won’t need any of the fancy 3-4 blitz packages. Stunts, tilts, blitzes, and corner back schemes come in many varieties in the 3-4 defense. Many of these will need to be left out or significantly modified if you want to use them at the pop horn level. The younger your players are, the less you have to do this.
The tilt used by the defensive line should be used at all age levels. This devastating technique will cause your defensive line to disrupt your opponent’s blocking patterns and they won’t even notice you’re doing it to them.
With proper preparation, including a full recon report of your next opponent, you should be able to use tilt to confuse your opponent’s blocking patterns. The beauty of the 3-4 defense is that you should be able to mess up your opponents’ entire offensive line using just three players. Hopefully you’ve spotted your opponent and have a good idea of what blocking styles they’ll be trying to use against your team. Using defensive line tilts, you’ll be able to occupy his five offensive linemen with just your nose guard and two defensive tackles. You will be able to play most of the game with a two man advantage. We show all the modifications for defensive line tilts and stunts in our 3-4 defense playbook for young people.
For more than 20 years, the 3-4 defense has been my basic defense. I’ve set it up with 14 year old travel level teams as well as 5 year old flag teams and have had tremendous success. I coached in the smallest city in my conference and rarely allowed more than two runs in any game. In almost half of my games we shut out our opponents and I have a winning percentage of over 80%. I believe in minimal to no blitz, and I like to use defensive line tilt to draw opposing offensive linemen away from my linebackers. Unblocked backers run free to make plays and I want my best athletes to run free.
In conclusion, the 3-4 makes a wonderful defense to use at all levels of football as long as coaches use a modified version applicable to the level they are coaching.
