Surviving a Season – Author – Michael J DeFranco, MD – Book Review
Anyone old enough to read this review has at least at some point in their life seen the inside of an emergency room due to injury. Preventing injury is an intrinsic human instinct; however, given the competitiveness of the sports, one may find that they go against common sense in order to achieve greatness in athletic recognition. So something breaks.
Dr. Michael J. DeFranco, an orthopedic surgeon and sports team physician, has seen many injuries and so was motivated to draw the attention of coaches and parents to some common sense principles for accident prevention. His book begins with a summary of common terms and issues using many clearly drawn and labeled diagrams. We’ve learned most of this over the years in various ways, but humbly it’s good to receive a new “one more time”. Problems related to an incident, called “acute”, or overuse injuries, called “chronic”, are explained and categorized in an easy-to-understand story, accompanied by numerous illustrations.
Interestingly, Dr. Michael DeFranco writes, “Young athletes are not smaller versions of adult athletes and should not be trained in the same way. First, he draws attention to the fact that children have many differences, including a head-to-body ratio that naturally creates imbalance. Also, due to their small size, protective gear may not fit properly. More importantly, children’s open growth plates at key locations in their skeletons, if damaged, can lead to abnormal bone growth and chronic disease. Finally, children naturally lack coordination during puberty and are more prone to accidents. Personally, I cringe when I watch youngsters playing football, with equipment too big for their frame and the coaching staff and parents yelling from the touchline to ‘hit harder’.
The book is about good health, especially bone health. Dr. DeFranco uses an acronym CPR, in this case meaning “Consume Calcium and Vitamin D, Participate in Physical Activity, and Recognize Risk Factors for Bone Disease. Think CPR for Strong Bones.”
Dr. DeFranco further comments on holistic injury avoidance issues with facts about healthy lifestyles. It identifies the need to have a positive attitude and how to deal with a possible injury if and when it occurs. These “words of wisdom” come from a man who knows what he is talking about, as such his good advice should be welcomed. In fact, I believe this book is an important document and should be given to every student-athlete. It should be as common as a team uniform. Parents and coaches should pay attention to methods to avoid accidents and injuries, because although they may not be fatal, the ramification of any accident due to ignorance during a youngster’s development is inadmissible. This is a fun, easy-to-read book that will appeal to people of all ages and physical activity levels.
