PSA Shut Down for 90 Days – The Effect on the Sports Card Industry
On March 30, 2021, PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) announced that it was temporarily suspending all rating services under Super Express ($350 per card) for at least 90 days in hopes of reopening all services around July 1. 2021. PSA received more cards in 3 days than they did in the previous 3 months, which led to the backlog and ultimately the difficult decision to suspend new submissions for a few months.
OK, so let’s look at the impact this can have in the short term. The long term should be negligible for the sports card industry, as it seems at present, as they intend to return to servicing all PSA rating levels within 90 days.
1 – People I believe will take a step back and take note of each card’s inspection and really enjoy finding the card for what it is more than just looking for a rated card because they won’t note not as many cards as before simply because of the postponement of PSA benefits.
2 – With SGC (Sportscard Guaranty Company) at a minimum of $75/card and BGS (Beckett Grading Services) at a minimum of $100/card to get a rated card within a month or less, we don’t We’re probably not going to see much of an increase in business since PSA still has Super Express service open at $350/card and their brand commands much higher open market values.
3 – Suspension of PSA grading services leaves room for companies like HGA (Hybrid Grading) and CSG (Certified Sports Guaranty) to catch up, especially on low-end cards worth $500 or less because of their low cost grading services. . So far I think it will be CSG that has the best chance of grabbing a good market share for cards worth $500 or less away from PSA at least in the short term while the service of PSA value is suspended. How much market share CSG retains if PSA restores the $25 value-grading service is the unknown variable.
4 – In the short term, PSA 10 values are expected to increase on all cards, but especially on low end cards valued at $1000 or less simply because you can’t rate with a PSA sports card at that value unless you wanted to use the Super Express Service, but that wouldn’t make financial sense at $350 per card. I expect this will create more demand for these cards in the near term. However, in the long term, many base level cards that are PSA 10 should revert to normal values once/if PSA resumes their value service which is currently set at $25/card. Commodity higher value cards in all markets (baseball, football, basketball, etc.) should continue to rise as there are fewer available in the market, which is the simple rule of the game. supply and demand.
