Wacky, Weird but True Youth Football Stories
More ‘war’ stories from youth football coaches
When we go to private clinics, we get to hear some of the most incredible stories from your young football coaches. Some of what you have to endure might even have made Job wince in the Old Testament. I will never forget the story I heard last year of a junior football coach who was running my system for the first time. The head of his organization was against it from the start, the big boss wanted this team to stay true to his “proven” Power I. BUT the power I didn’t work with was this group of kids and teams in this organization were constantly losing, losing big and most importantly, losing players.
From worst to almost first
Well, our friend decided to try our system out of desperation after another lost season. His team went on to go 9-1, a huge improvement from the previous year’s 2-win season. His team quadrupled their offensive production and had 9 different kids scoring touchdowns. You would have thought the head of the organization would have given this coach a gold wristwatch and the keys to the city, right? No, he told our friend, “You’ll never beat team X with this offense”, so our team of heroes wins 9 games, goes to the super bowl and loses the championship game, have fun, get everyone involved the kids and hold back everyone and all the big cheeses can say is “You’ll never beat Team X with this offense”?????
Last-place coach advises Super Bowl coach
Remember the critic’s team not only won a game that season, but they only scored 4 touchdowns the WHOLE SEASON. I’m not kidding, I’m not exaggerating one iota. The gaulle of someone with that kind of lean production criticizing a trainer who performed a 180-degree turnaround? As unbelievable and ridiculous as it sounds, it’s so true and sadly more common than you might think. Just be prepared to bite your tongue and be diplomatic, there are plenty of parents and even coaches with no history of success who think they know more than you or who are so jealous of your success that they’ll try to get away with it. ignore at every turn. . All you can do is smile, bite your tongue, and hope that they will one day read a copy of “Atlas Shrugged.”
A justified “Silliness in Youth Football Coaching Award”
Another story that comes to mind is about another organization leader. Hope I got my facts right on this one, if I don’t it’s very close. Like many organizations, this one has 2 teams for each age group. While teams are supposed to be equal, they are not, all returning players are funneled into the “anointed” team, all leftovers and rookies go to our buddy’s team. Our poor friend knows that the only way for his team to survive with their line of “misfit toy countries” is to do something different from other teams in the league. He finds the website, buys the equipment, drinks the cool-aid and becomes a believer. As you probably guessed, this team starts off slow, but by the end of the seasons they are the most improved junior football team in the league (almost all rookies) and end up 6-2-1 if I well remember even giving the “anointed” team a very surprising run for their money.
The following season it’s the same story, all the best players are handpicked for the team anointed all the rookies and the less athletic kids are “dropped” in this team. On top of that, the head of the organization is so concerned that the “remaining” team will beat his anointed team that he removed 4 more players from the remaining team just 1 week before their first game. Can you imagine? Well our friend ended up having a great season, they beat the anointed team and only lost to the eventual league champion, with a makeshift roster. The coach told me that many other coaches in the league would show up to watch his games, not to scout, but to see all the poor direction and precision ball movement of his offense with very average kids. He ended up getting a bunch of compliments from a number of his coaching peers last year after those games. My hat goes to the coach for keeping his cool and staying focused on the kids and his end goal and not the head of the organization or what he didn’t have for the players. Staying positive even in the most difficult and silly circumstances, the children and the coaches had an unforgettable season.
Coaching youth football in an upside down world
Guys, youth football is not perfect. But know that if your situation isn’t perfect or you’re getting nipped at the heels of those afflicted by the green-eyed monster of jealousy, you’re not alone. Prepare and expect this, even if you do everything right. Keep the end goal in mind and train your children to their full potential. Unfortunately, this lack of jealousy is part of human nature. Try not to take it personally.
